Predictions for technology trends in 2010 by Jim Langel, resource from Deloit Canada. I found the podcast by following the link provided teaching with technology podcast.
These are a few technology devices mentioned in this podcast with recommendations concerning IPod, I pad, Cloud computing. 76% of students own an IPod. Deloit recommend that teachers make sure all the books and assignments can be formatted to be available on the IPod. I pad- connect direct to internet, smaller than a textbook; can do a lot that a laptop can. Recommend encouraging and supporting the use of variety devices, be flexible so curriculum content works on all of them. Smartphone and computer are based on employee commands. Recommend to scan the market place for new technology that has educational value for the classroom. Cloud computing. Deloit recommend to encourage school to provide a cloud where students and teachers can back up their data, share documents, avoid virtual desktops and many others data.
I have learned that technology must be embraced and as a teacher can be used at my advantage to teach our children and make information more accessible. Be prepared to adopt and adapt to new technology. I would recommend this to others. This podcast encourage teachers to use what students have available to them. Although many students use IPod to view video and listen to music, it also can be used as an educational tool.
Cynthia,
ReplyDeleteTeachers should not be afraid to embrace technology. Before taking this class I was not big on technology and to me an iPod was just something for music or videos that I could use while at the gym, but iPods are so much more. Kids today know how to use iPods and most kids have one so to use this device in class would not be hard for them to grasp. We cannot keep teaching students in the same way that we were taught, we have to change so that students will engage in the lesson and be prepared for the world when they leave high school.
Cynthia,
ReplyDeleteIt is a good idea to integrate into the classroom what the students are already familiar with and what they enjoy using. I would welcome anything that would help me to do my classwork on the go because that is the life of a working mother going to school. Though I am not so sure when I could pop in my ear buds to listen to something from an ipod while on the go because I always have my children with me. About the only place I can get quiet time to think is in the shower and that is not always the case. :)
Cynthia,
ReplyDeleteMy kids seem to know more about these different technologies more than I do. I'm only 28 but still, I feel a little behind on what they know. My daughter has the 1st generation iphone and she is always showing me new apps and cool downloads for the phone. I recently downloaded some apps for weather which is pretty awesome to know that there is truly learning apps for school education.
Carrie I agree with you. Haha! If I could do homework in the shower I would totally have in A in all my classes!!!!
ReplyDeleteCynthia, I think these podcast are great for the kids. I have always seen the word podcast but never knew it's true meaning and benefits and I am so glad I came to know, learn, and experience it first hand.
I just now joined the world of SmartPhones. My basic GoPhone finally let me down and wouldn't hold a charge anymore--and I can't find my iTouch. So, I went on AT&T and looked at what I could get as an phone upgrade. They were offering a refurbished iPhone GS for just a penny. I had no excuse--except that it will raise my cell phone bill another $25/month. So, I spend Thursday night registering my phone and Friday transferring music from iTunes to my phone. Now, I'm ready to explore the different apps. My son suggested Dragon Speaking, which will transcribe what I say so I can have a transcript of my presentations or podcasts.
